We carry out the followership roles whenever we interact with our boss or more senior staff, whenever we attend a meeting as a team member, and so on. We put our ‘client hat’ on whenever we interact with our internal or external clients. The core skills required to be effective in this role is relationship management skills, many of which will be covered when looking in depth at how we can be more effective leaders. The combination of focus on the technical and client roles and absence of training in the leadership role explains why so many managers are poor delegators, and work very long hours to less than optimum effects.
